I have not posted in a while. Maintaining a creative rhythm seems a bit challenging now. I think it has to do with the season and the economic climate. It is a good time to explore and play. I have been taking my camera and the dog on long walks, practicing lots of yoga and thinking more about the creative process.

A few thoughts:

Sometimes you have be still and listen-creativity comes; it can't be forced, only nurtured and respected

Sometimes creative ideas hide in the cracks and are waiting to jump out at you

Sometimes ideas are right at your feet... so step lightly

And sometimes they require that you gaze in a new direction.

It's been a busy flurry of making design to submit to manufacturers for the holidays.
Here is a peak at a few designs not submitted- maybe they will get reworked
and used another time. I learn a lot every time I produce surface patterns and collections.

Here is a new collection pattern for stationery or fabric. I've been inspired by african motifs and patterns. I have been spending hours drawing with pen and ink. Then I turn the drawings into vectors and play with it in photoshop. Love the process.

thoughts about making stuff

i've been thinking about what i am learning as an artist. this last year has been challenging in many ways. here are a few thoughts about making art.

1. art changes us. it allows us to see through others eyes. it provokes questions and wonder.

2 art + life are messy. don't be afraid to get messy. Don't get too precious with that beautiful thing you just made. let it go to find it again. trust. befriend your mess- its your greatest teacher.

3. find stillness. To go deeper in your work, wait, listen- the answer is there waiting to be heard/felt and realized.

4. stay with the breath. stay in the present moment. that is the process. the process is the journey and the destination. It is all the same dance.

5.watch, notice, study and listen. take breaks. go for long walks. be in nature. carry a sketchbook. take notes. take pictures.

6.embrace. appreciate. inquire. Try something new- a new pen- hot press, not cold press, draw with your eyes closed, and of course,use your non-dominant hand. stand outside your box.

7. be grateful- your here and your a maker! What could be better?

I've been busy making surface designs. I'm particularly taken with some of this quirky little kid ideas..birds,butterflies,bunnies. Who knew???? I am thinking they could work well as fabric designs for licensing. I'm planning on going to Printsource in January to learn more about the licensing world. Her are a few new ideas to share.
